What are the world's cheapest travel destinations and where does a vacation cost the most? The FOREX Travel Index compares the price level in 95 countries and helps you see how far your travel budget can stretch to different destinations. Sweden has an index of 100 – a lower value means that the price level is lower than in Sweden, while a higher value means that it is higher.
The FOREX Travel Index makes it easier to compare cheap and expensive countries, giving an overall picture of what two adults can expect it to cost - compared to at home - during a week's holiday. Countries such as Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy have a lower overall price level than Sweden, while Barbados, Ireland, Iceland and Switzerland have a higher overall price level. The Bahamas is the most expensive destination in the FOREX Travel Index 2026.
In this year's FOREX Travel Index, India, Egypt and Nepal are the countries with the lowest price levels. Here, food, transport, coffee and other common holiday expenses can be much cheaper than in Sweden. Several destinations in Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia and Vietnam, also rank far down in the index. This means that the destinations are cheaper and can provide good opportunities to get more experience for your travel budget.
Heading out to Europe is the obvious choice for many travelers. European countries are slightly further down the list of popular destinations, with Albania, Bulgaria, and Hungary. Countries like Greece, Portugal, and Croatia are even further down.
At the top of the most expensive travel destinations are the Bahamas, Monaco and the USA. Iceland, Switzerland and Norway also make the list as significantly more expensive than at home.

The index covers costs that travelers often encounter on site, such as restaurant visits, coffee, beer, transportation, activities, shopping and more. The index gives you a better starting point for planning your vacation budget – regardless of whether you are looking for an affordable city trip, a cheap beach vacation or a destination where your travel budget will last a little longer.

A country with an index of 70 has an estimated cost level corresponding to around 70 percent of the Swedish tourist basket. This does not mean that every good or service is exactly 30 percent cheaper. Differences between big cities, smaller towns, popular tourist areas and different seasons can be significant. Values ​​between approximately 95 and 105 should in practice be interpreted as a price level close to Sweden's. Small differences on a few index points are not sufficient to establish that a country is always cheaper or more expensive.
Indexet bygger på en jämförbar turistkorg för två vuxna under sju dagar. Korgen innehåller middag för två på mellanprisrestaurang, luncher för två, cafébesök och kaffe, barhäng och dryck, snabbmat och enklare servering, lokaltrafik och taxi, mat, vatten och vardagsköp i matbutik, typisk aktivitet eller sevärdhet för två, lokal drickskultur, turistskatt för sju nätter. Boende och resan till destinationen ingår inte. Prisuppgifterna har normaliserats och vägts samman, varefter Sveriges kostnadsnivå har satts till index 100. Underlaget avser huvudsakligen 2025–2026.
Viktigt om index
Ett index jämför prisnivåer under en viss period. Förändrade valutakurser och priser på exempelvis restaurangbesök, taxi, aktiviteter och turistskatter kan påverka placeringen över tid. FOREX Reseindex ska därför ses som en indikation på den övergripande prisnivån. Prisunderlaget har sammanställts från bland annat Numbeo, Eurostat/SSB, Världsbanken, Budget Your Trip, Expatistan, OECD samt nationella statistik- och turismkällor.
