The cheapest of all destinations in this year's index is Hurghada in Egypt, with an index of 26. This means that a trip here can be as much as 75% cheaper than at home in Sweden. In second place is Phuket in Thailand (40), where the travel fund lasts about 60% longer.

For those looking for exotic experiences in the Atlantic, Sal in Cape Verde (50) is a gem. Here, the price level is about half of the Swedish one. The Caribbean also attracts with affordable alternatives: Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic (61) and Cancún in Mexico (71), where it is 30-40% cheaper than in Sweden. Travel fund tips from FOREX:

Cash and cards

Always have a mix of cash and cards – it provides both flexibility and security.

Cash is king

In some destinations, cash is still the most common means of payment.

FOREX Credit Card

FOREX Credit Card has no currency surcharges and offers free withdrawals outside the EU/EEA – perfect for trips to e.g. Cape Verde.

Alternative currencies

On islands such as Cape Verde, or in countries where local currency is not easy to exchange in advance, the euro often serves as an alternative currency.

Payment tips

For small purchases

Always have smaller bills ready for taxis, markets and tips – especially in countries where cash is the norm.

Excursions and activities

Many are booked and paid for directly on site (e.g. snorkeling in Egypt) – expect cash to be required.

Restaurants and bars

At many destinations, you are expected to leave tips in cash, even if the bill has been paid by card.

Hotel

The actual room payment is usually by card, but local tourist tax or small fees may have to be paid in cash.

Card smart

Use the card for larger amounts – hotel, car rental, shopping – and cash for everyday expenses.
